really excited to see what he does with wicked
This man paved the way for Ke Huy Kwan’s return to Hollywood. His work has had ripple effects and I’m sure these will continue to bring more opportunities to talented people we haven’t even met yet
it's irrelevant, the only thing that should be represented is the story being adapted
NO!!! THEY GAVE HIM WICKED TOO?? Whose idea was to cutt out crucial songs and rewrite lyrics to write Nina's mom out of the musical??? So a supportive mother is less relatable than a dead beat alcoholic dad?? They cutt out songs that made Nina's dad more human, Doña Claudia had already cashed the money and told Usnavi to help her hide it during the musical number and instead distracted the audience with Vanessa and Usnavi's connection. THERE WAS A WHOLE LOVE SCENE BETWEEN NINA AND BENNY THAT GOT TAKEN OUT THAT SHOWED THAT BENNY WANTED TO BE PART OF NINA'S LIFE. DON'T get me started with the Piragua guy (also cutt out some of his songs) NOW THEY GAVE THIS GUY WICKED??? We're going to miss out on so many songs now. Incomplete musicals are fucking horrible
Taiwan is a part of China, thank you!
Storytime 🍿: There is a little-spoken-of exploitative & unethical aspect of how Jon M Chu (& book author Kevin Kwan) promoted this film to Asian Americans: they did a huge open casting call to unknown Asian actors to submit auditions for all the main roles to YouTube, to create grass roots viral interest among AAs, and then never followed up! It generated huge excitement among thousands of Asian actors because they already so rarely get any break or representation. It was a whole thing for a few weeks on Twitter & YouTube: people obviously spent a lot of time preparing, hoping & dreaming & talking about this upcoming Asian American movie, lauding Jon M Chu for uplifting Asian actors hashtagging the the heck out of film to free viral publicity. Then, less than a month later, it became increasingly obvious that the film had already begun shooting with well-known actors n location in Singapore, and the search to uplift unknown Asian actors was never spoken of again. Upon researching, it came out in an IndieWire article that Jon M. Chu (w slimeball Scooter Braun who infamously bought out Taylor Swift’s catalog w/o her knowing, so she couldn’t get any more royalties for her own music) had pulled a similar marketing stunt previously among young women asking for unknown audition submissions for the title role Jem and the Holograms in 2014—a movie that only had a $5M budget (and therefore exploited fans’ hopes of stardom to market it). Less than a month later, the film was fully cast with no mention of the audition for an unknown lead actress. The movie tanked, and no one really talked about it. Ironically, because CRA did WELL $, an understanding that Asian Americans should have the singular reaction of “proud” prevailed, because it was their singular big movie in a long time. In conclusion, Jon M. Chu exploited Asian people to market CRA, knowing about and preying on their lack of representation.
May I just say that Jon Chu is paving the way for representation in film with Crazy Rich Asians and In The Heights!
inspiring
I enjoyed this video, based on the title I was skeptical and I had a desire to dislike it before even watching it. But I decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I did
Wow. A wonderful TEDTalk
The Justin Bieber movies are his best movies
Usually those who complain about representation are those who have it already, they don't know what it feels to be underrepresented.
Maybe let the man finish speaking and let his talk have an impact before popping ads on everyone and distracting them from the message @ted
Muito bom. Criativo, engraçado, humilde e um espetáculo de incentivo. valeu!!
Love from India,Aizawl City..God bless Asian
Thanks for what you've done! Didn't understand lack of representation and lack of community with my Asian brothers and sisters until I went to the Women's Rally this year and they mentioned every other race, except for Asians. Now, look what you have helped to start! The power of pride wasn't so clear until CRA appeared. I didn't realize how invisible I felt until I saw CRA, so thanks to Jon Chu and all who came before and after💓💓
Or, you know, people could learn to look beyond the surface and empathize with others based on the character itself and not how they look? But that would be asking too much of the modern liberal progressive weirdos. They actually enjoy being racist and bigoted in the name of “progress”
Who is he?
Isn't the Joy Luck Club the first Asian American movie with Asian American actors?
lefty bs
I'm black and I support all movies with people of color. We need to step up and help each other. Last weekend I bought my copy of Crazy Rich Asians on 4K disc.
This guy goes on about the lack of representation. He's Asian. Most of the worlds population is Asian. In Asian countries there is nothing but Asian representation. Why do they need to come here and in effect displace Americans? This is the story they try to make now. That somehow by displacing and possessing American people this is something to be proud of. They now see the existence of Americans as the problem to overcome. White people have woken up, but they need to seriously get in gear when it comes to people like this Asian.
It's an impressive accomplishment, but a bit hollow, as many of the cast members are sellouts.
I'm here because my friends gave me this video link 😊
Totes adorbs! TED POO!
Thank god I decided to see if there were any interesting new ted talks.
why so many dislikes?
the movie is too glamorous
WOKE…SJW…Shill…..TRASH
🦋God put that fire in your heart for a reason
Also while you're at it, stop stereotyping brown men and women from other countries. If you cannot portray a Middle Eastern guy as anything but a terrorist or a Mexican person as a drug dealer then your films are just another medium of state propaganda.
TED is so woke, they don’t have time for actual new ideas.
when i was little, kids would constantly say i should be mulan for halloween (happened in high school too) and everytime the magic school bus played, theyd single me out of the class and say im the asian girl in it to embarass me. id get asked if jackie chan was my dad as a joke. so yeah. representation is important. but the only progress we have is fresh of the boat and crazy rich asians.
1. Taiwan is not China.
2. Nobody deserves representation.
3. If you want something to happen, make it yourself instead of complaining when people don't offer you a free ride based on your heritage.
Just movies. All this fucking controversy and representation issues, God! World would be a better place in some aspects without movies!
I couldn’t care less about diversity in movies. I loved crazy rich Asians and it makes sense that it’s predominantly Asian just like a movie in Nigeria is full of black people or a movie in Scandinavia with all white people. Geographical/historical accuracy is important IMO. Represent yourself, don’t look to others to represent you. Especially Hollywood.
Crazy rich Asians was a run of the mill rom com that wasn't even funny. If not for having an all Asian cast it would have the terrible reviews it deserves. There is nothing original about that movie other than it's literally ALL Asian characters.
diversity should be treated as a spice. It doesn't make a movie but it sure can enhance one.
I am not an individual. When someone that looks like me succeeds or fails, I deeply care because it is important that people that look like me succeed and do not fail. But I am not racist.
Racial nepotism is a form of love.
Yay, bravo, excellent movie. Love Jon's work. 👍👍👍
1000th view!!
Sometimes you have to get knocked down lower than you've ever been, to stand up taller than you ever were.
Twice the pride, double the fall
