Some can't get paid internships – it's a 5% chance unless the program you have is already equipped. A person can't sit for an exam they can't train for. Research says 50% chance therapy is successful. DSM is a medical manual. Therapy is not a medical job.
When I discovered life coaches it was kind of odd because it seemed to be only life coaches coaching other coaches, and selling courses to each other. It was like a pyramid scheme that life coaches had createed
"Mental illness" is the modern take on therapy, the Disease Model. Used to call them "Mental Disorder" (which CBT is amazing at addressing in terms of evidenced based intervention), but Big Pharma wants their slice of the pie so the Disease Model reigns supreme! IMO.
How you respond to different stimulu, Shade = Prove, Challenge = Seeking
Great answer!
Anyone can guide me to find right coach to get rid off my low self esteem and social anxiety
I'm interested in becoming a state-registered life coach in the form of a QMHP-A in the state of Virginia and working in tandem with licensed professional counselors and therapists.
❤❤❤
I have an MSE in education. Everything is so incredibly regulated. There is no real need for coaching certification. At least not in my state. Really. I think it’s super annoying and a big scam to have to be qualified in everything. The states always want their cut. When In reality personal experience and wisdom from someone who is of an analytical mind, That they can see something from several different perspectives is best to have at ur side. I have worked in the teaching field and some of them are completely nuts yet think they are god gift to education. A lot of the women teachers are super pathetic when it comes to life choices in men and making quick decisions with wanting to fit the mold. Have to get married make babies fast and fit in. I know several women who have selected bums to support. Teachers to me are one of the dumbest group of people on the planet. My mom didn’t even finish her high school diploma. She was so incredibly quick witted about relationships and money, money management, motherhood, how to deal with people. She didn’t finish high school because she was going to get the paddle. So I asked her one day when I was working at the college. I said hey ma, u wanna get ur GED. She scoffed and said what for. I’m already a millionaire. Lol. Of course never living lavishly u will go through any money u make. But my aunt who grew up in the rice fields of her country can’t let a dime go either. These women will die and with all this money. And not a days worth of college or diploma. College is overrated. It’s all a way to make u get into debt fast and drown before u can get started. Mom was a full time house wife, stay at home mother, and business owner. She was the boss in every Avenue of her life and died like a Queen on a thrown. So did college make her street smart? College is t worth the toilet paper or any certificate if u fail to have common sense and street smarts. Also therapist can push their own bias opinions and agendas as much as anyone else. My therapist sister was just working for a complete lunatic. And she’s a social worker. The nut job was crazy. I think after a while. Therapist go crazy too. How can u avoid it. U are a dumping ground for problems all day long. I was about to be a therapist too but I switched majors last minute. And quiet frankly I rather just get my feet wet at life coach. My experience I have so much to offer. I laugh when I see people going to therapist younger then the client. It’s like what kind of experience do u really have to offer little moss fresh out of college.
You are right we as life coaches refer people for serious mental health issues. After Mental health issues are sort of resolved then Coaching comes in. We are not therapists and Life coaches primarily work with individuals to help them achieve their personal and professional goals, enhance their overall happiness and well-being, and navigate through life transitions. They use various tools and techniques, including Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), positive psychology, goal setting, and mindset coaching, to empower their clients. The focus is on identifying and breaking through limiting beliefs, clarifying values, improving relationships, and fostering personal growth. Each coaching session is tailored to the client's specific needs and aspirations, aiming to bring about positive and lasting changes in their lives.
As someone who's training to be a certified Life coach I agree with all you say, and first off one of the rules I am being taught is that a life coach is but a life coach, not an adviser, a therapist, a counsellor, or a doctor of any sort, and as an ethical life coach you are there to act in the client 's best interests. If they are working with any other professionals you do not discourage the client you try and work with that professional, or if you feel a client may need the help of a counsellor a therapist or another professional you gently bring this to the client that you are unable to help them then encourage him/her to consider speaking to a medical doctor who may be able to advise them of other professionals to deal with the issues they have so they can once again be their best then after their issues are resolved if they then wish to continue coaching you may as a coach continue.
One glaring contradiction in your talk. (1) As in every job there are some who are just no good at it. That's a fact. A sad fact of life. (2) Go get a life coach. IT CAN ONLY HELP. (3) Say what ?????? Do you see it ???? If they stink at their job and go against what a psychologist says ????? It will not help. (4) But i do support your overall message. The search . . . even if rocky as hell . . . will make you stronger.
The difference between a life coach and therapist is that a therapist digs in your past to try and fix your past traumas.. where a life coach gives you new perspectives to overcome barriers you may have for your FUTURE.. therapist are people that go to college for a degree that most have no life experiences that relate to the clients.. life coaches are more likely to relate and have overcame what the client is going through.. you express certifications like thats the big point.. life experiences IS the certification.. i bet as a therapist, theres very little that you can relate to your client and are only giving advice from your books.. me personally, i would rather hear from someone who has experience not training..
Great video! Life Coaches who are ICF certified DO NOT give advice.
This video is about the comments section 🙂
AND just bc a therapist has a "certification" doesn't mean anything.
Respectfully, therapists look to the past to explain the today. Life coaches look to today and support to make the best of the future.
Life coaches remind me of two sayings I've heard in my life. The first one came from an economics teacher I had while going to Community College. He said a person who claims to know everything knows nothing and the second phrase is a classic jack of all trades master of none
Currently finishing up my certification and appreciate your take. I've always been one that people come to for help/advice, but I'm new to the actual side of coaching, and this helps me feel reassured that I have chosen the right path.

Wonderful objective review! Respect that!
My previous therapist was a college student in a master’s counseling program. She was open to allowing me to use her services as I saw fit. Therapists I’ve seen in the past were focused on talking childhood trauma, but it made me feel like I was indulging in venting and “talking it out” while not taking much action to get things done that I needed to get done. During a Zoom session with my last therapist, she allowed me to clean my apartment as she provided moral support. Without her support, I would have told my therapist I’d clean my apartment (and other things I was needed to do) only to procrastinate. She was a sort of a life coach therapist hybrid who gave me goal assignments that she held me accountable to carry out. I didn’t want to disappoint her, so I was mostly on top of doing what I said I’d
do.
I am trained on how to teach mental illness! It's called the BIBLE.
Life coaches don’t give advice!
You don't mind working with life coaches because both life coaches AND therapists are scams.
Im listening to this presentation and will share my experience going through the US Mental Health system…. Its a system and you can obtain all the certifications regarding working for the system but if your patients do not receive results than its all for not. Its a completely broken system and the things that they claimed would help me (Psychiatric drugs) made things worse. Diagnosis or labels dont do anything to fix the problem. Results driven, positive transformation, and health and well being is what every client deserves.
I don’t think throwing salt on life coaches is going to make people run to therapists… Life Coaches aren’t a trend – And this video sounds like you might be a hater 🤷🏼♂️ ijs #my2cents
This makes me so so happy. Thank you so much for this video!!!!! I feel this urge to heal people (in terms of feeling peace in their hearts…like knowing themselves and their needs/boundaries/healthy relationships/selflove etc.), yet I didn't want to become a psychologist because I was not mentally stable myself when I had to choose a degree at university. Now I've healed myself through books and online content over the years (didn't have money for direct coaching) and I wanna share and help with others who are going through the same. Since I'm extremely sensitive (I'm highly sensitive) I'm afraid of being impacted by people with extremely bad mental health, like depression and suicidal. So I'd like to produce self help content for other highly sensitive people (that way I can share the positivity and ensure my own mental health won't suffer). That would make me some kind of life coach and I've heard so many people say all life coaches are scammers and being all negative about anybody working in this mental wellbeing field, who's not a psychologist. Thank you for saying that life coaches are valuable and legit 🥰
"mental Illness" is a term made up for unresolved trauma!
I disagree with relationship coaches. Whereby I fully support life and accountability coaches, I do not believe in relationship coaches as they mostly deal with deep-rooted psychological issues and this should be done with a therapist. I have seen this live recently, where half the coaches had bad relationships and were fighting, but teaching people how to set boundaries. I have never in my life seen this bad a hypocrisy with a therapist.
Life coaching is a pyramid scheme
I’m a life coach and I always coach my clients to speak with their doctors and insurance to obtain a therapist.
My job is to help structure my clients life to a consistent routine to get them out of stagnation so they can achieve their goals. I also have the ability to fire my clients when they start to bs my time. I could be using that time slot to help someone to get moving but it’s the new age of individuals with narcissistic traits and they like to waste other peoples time. I’m also a psychology major and have a degree but I don’t want to be a therapist.
I’m 59 and can’t decide if need a life coach, a therapist or what. All I know is that my get up and go has gotten up and went and it’s depressing.
This video is spot on! I'm not a fan of life coaches posting meme psychology (pop psychology) to the masses, it's become an epidemic of malpractice. Their memes via short videos and visuals give predatorial people the propaganda to position themselves in the right especially when their victims are aware of the predatorial person's public lie. For example, Linda was abusive to Stacy and posted a meme psychology picture about poor communicators being poor friends. Now the mutual friends think Stacy is at fault. It can push people with a victim mentality further into that head space. Life coaching to the masses fails the common audience participants because they are likely mindlessly scrolling and not using critical thinking to assess the quality. Quinlan Walther posted on Instagram that "people who can't communicate think everything is an argument". Think about what that message says. It's an incredibly ignorant statement that holds practically no truth. Imagine thousands of people weaponizing that Reel to throw a little jab at someone who triggered them. Then you get into the meaning of it and have to question almost every word and phrase. Ultimately, it's a statement that does nothing for the person it was intended to reach. Life coaching as a field has a high potential to attract predatorial people as a way of establishing an authoritative position for arguments.
I'm only scratching the surface here, but I know clinical therapists and I've heard horror stories of people speeding towards rock bottom in life because a so-called "life coach" didn't know what they were doing and embellished the patient's tendencies.
We need to talk more about life coaching boundaries and establish clearly what is and is not acceptable practices, starting with meme psychology posts that have no place being proclaimed as mostly true or even sometimes true.
Thank you for your video and clarifying that these are your thoughts. I am a certified mental & behavioral health & wellness coach, and I have been a therapist. There are many Clinicians that are also Coaches. The approaches differ. In addition, if you look into the National Board of Health and Wellness you will find that these Coaches are recognized by insurance companies in process of being a billable code in early 2025). International Coaching Federation (Not approved by insurance companies) International Coaching Federation focuses on more executive and leadership coaching. There are no state and federal guidelines- or international that have guidelines or requirements. Coaching like you said does not diagnosis. I would invite you to do a consultation with a coach and see how you feel. Another video would be amazing! It is an incredible approach and I have helped break the stigma around therapy and many of my clients have sought therapists.
Life coaching is not a long term approach.
People can have a pretty jaundiced view of therapists, too. Perhaps there is a role for both.
Therapist are totally different then life coaches. We here to inspire and help you move past blockages and narratives that are not yours. Therapist are in my opinion are not helpful.
I really think we should have life coaches and therapist and they should work together! Certified means nothing it's a piece of paper your real life experience and over coming is what makes you a valuable asset to be able to help someone in similar circumstances
I was a team manager (now I am in HR) at a big company for awhile and we had a mandatory coaching training and a consultant helping us implement coaching practices when talking to employees – I felt like it was incredibly useful and engaging for employees and contributed to building trust and creating good relationships with everyone, though it was not always the most efficient approach keeping in mind the type of environment we were working in was one where results were expected quickly and, after all, there were different expectations than in coach – coacheé relationship. That is to say that in my experience for this type of environment specifically, a balance of coaching and constructive feedback was ideal. Anywho! During this time period there were a couple of times when I encouraged an employee to start seeing a therapist because they had some personal issues which I was not equipped to help with. I am thinking of getting into coaching again as a side hustle because I loved it and I would definitely have the same approach. I have also been seeing a therapist and coach myself for a couple of years and she is immensely supportive of this idea 🙂
As a side note, I think it's very important for anyone with a social profession to work on themselves and ensure that they are not allowing their own challenges (which of course we all have) to reflect in their work with others. This is why even though I have handled the impact of some unfortunate circumstances in my life for the most part, I am still consistently seing my therapist on a monthly basis to have kind of a mental health check-in day, and sometimes more often if I am going through a particularly challenging period.
Greetings for the Day,
I HAD BAD LUCK WITH BOTH MY WIVES. THE FIRST ONE LEFT ME, THE SECOND ONE DIDN'T….
Please let me know what to do ?

Life coaches what darlin ?
I am a certified life coach, and hypnotherapist .I make people sign a contract, and on my contract it states that I am not a medical professional, if a life coach is doing anything other than helping someone identify and accomplish a goal, then they are working outside their scope of work. also if I plan on helping someone with a goal and deciding you use hypnotherapy if they have any pre-existing medical conditions, or mental issues I make them get a release from their Dr, to make sure they are ok with moving forward with my session. I.E weight loss and quitting smoking. But my main function as a life coach is to ask challenging questions, I try my best to figuratively hold a mirror up to the person and ask questions to make them see how they are getting in the way of their goals.
We live in such a degree driven world. A lot of psychologists and therapists are terrible and they are certainly certified 😂
Coaching was more effective with my clients than therapy.
Hi! I am currently training for my Professional Life Coach Certification (CPC). It has been an amazing journey so far. I look forward to helping make an impact through coaching.
Certificates or degrees has very less to do with knowledge and ability of doing something
I have worked with multiple coaches and therapists. I don’t want to discount the extensive training that therapists go to (including one I saw who had his doctorate) but to be honest I saw far more differences individually than I did between professions. I found it’s more important to find someone you click with and suits your individual needs and preferences than to find someone with a certain certification. Although yes, of course, as you mentioned, if there is a serious mental health issue, a mental health professional should be involved. For many people though, I think coaching is a great option and often more affordable too.
Hey ,
I've been working on my copywriting skills and created a few samples for you. Feel free to use them if you find them helpful.
Could you please let me know where I can share them with you? I understand that sharing them in YouTube comments may not be ideal.
I think they could be great for like professional development or extra encouragement or a different perspective… but they don’t operate under an overarching authority and they don’t risk losing their license or business if they even accidentally give bad advice or lead you down the wrong path for you.
But when you are dealing with something deeper, they might be less than ideal as a sole care provider because their training doesn’t cover as deep issues. Or inform them of how to best deal with yours.
Love the idea that they can play a supportive role in your care team. To save money to talk to maybe more often than your psych who might be able to communicate with them to help track your progress toward your goals and encourage that.
Thank you so much Kati for this video. I am a certified life and business coach and resilience trainer and I think you nailed it. I do agree with a previous comment that a good life coach does quite a bit more than "kick in the pants", but I think that is fully besides your point. And I'm totally with you when you say that a good coach can really help people when they struggle with something. Also, a good coach will notice when the problems of a client go beyond coaching and will advice the client to consult a therapist. And if possible work hand in hand with a therapist to help the client as best they can.
Unfortunately, here in Germany where I live, the situation is such that people in need of a therapist will often have to wait for more than a year to get an appointment with one. In such cases, a coach can do a lot of good work, helping the client to overcome this waiting period in good health. But again, it must be a good coach, who knows what he/she is doing and works carefully and in the best interest of the client. Therefore, I can only subscribe to your advice to find a coach that is certified by an organisation such as ICF.
